Mercy win, tie in softball

Marshall's blanked Kangas Equipment Repair 8-0 in Peterborou­gh Men's Softball Associatio­n city league action Tuesday night at the George (Red) Sullivan East City Bowl. The game ended in the fifth inning by the mercy rule. Clayton Robinson was the winning pitcher for Marshall's and Cory Van Huiser took the loss for Kangas. Greg Watts belted a two-run home run for Marshall's in the fourth inning. In the night cap, Leahy Electrical Repair and the Curve Lake Terry's Gas Bar Slayers tied 7-7. Alex Douglas pitched for Leahy while Steve MacNaughto­n pitched for the Slayers. Jacob O'Grady hit an inside-thepark home run from Leahy, while Brydon McCue homered for the Slayers in the sixth inning. League action continues Thursday starting at 6:45 p.m. at the George (Red) Sullivan East City Bowl.

FRASERVILL­E -- Kawartha Downs will celebrate its 45th year of live harness racing Saturday night where two of the horses competing will be vying for their third straight win at the Fraservill­e racetrack.

In the first race St Lads Captain is the first to try for the triple after winning his last two starts at Kawartha Downs by more than three lengths each time. A threeyear-old gelding by Mach Three, St Lads Captain is trained by Wilf Perrault who co-owns with Grant and Joanne Curnow. Dan Gassien will be back in the bike on Saturday night when the horse leaves from post five.

In the fourth race it’s Bet Till Dawn who will go for his third straight. Dave Gibson trains and co-owns the Bettors Delight four-year-old with Glenn Tarver. Kawartha’s leading driver Reg Gassien will be up behind the gelding who has five wins earned thus far this year.

Patrons will receive free birthday cupcakes to celebrate the racetrack’s 45th birthday.

Saturday also marks the track’s Peterborou­gh's Mathew Stevens competes Wednesday at the Ontario Amateur. Bring A Friend where race goers are encouraged to bring someone with them to the track who has never been before.

A handicappi­ng seminar hosted by Nick Boyd and Gord Brown will be held from 6 to 6:30 p.m. to answer any questions the newcomers may have about the program or betting.

The Meet and Greet horse for the evening is Mr Tasty, who still holds the record for the fastest mile ever trotted at Kawartha (1:54).
