Traffic lights for Hwy. 28
Upgrade in the works for busy intersection with County Rd. 4
A busy intersection northeast of the city will soon be getting a major facelift.
Highway 28 and Peterborough County Road 4 will get new traffic signals, a dedicated southbound right turn lane, east and westbound left turn lanes and improvements to the existing north and soundbound left turn lanes, among other upgrades.
Highway 28 will also be widened between County Road 4 and County Road to the south to accommodate fully developed left turn lanes between the two intersections, according to a notice of study commencement published in local newspapers.
The Ministry of Transportation has retained WSP Canada Inc. to complete the detail design and class environmental assessment study for the improvements, which includes utility relocation and drainage improvements such as ditch grading and culvert replacement/extensions.
Between 2013 and 2016, the ministry completed a comprehensive operational review of the intersection in response to growing traffic volumes, officials stated.
This study evaluated opportunities to optimize the use of the existing facility, while providing for the efficient movement of people and goods, officials stated.
It examined existing and potential future problems and opportunities and provided a recommended plan of the intersection over the next 20 years.
A project website at www. HWY28PCR4intersection.comwent live Wednesday to present study findings and give stakeholders a chance to review and comment on the proposed detail design, officials stated.
A preliminary design was documented in a Transportation Environmental Study Report that was made available for public review from Jan. 5 to Feb. 6 before getting environmental clearance in May.
Information on expected timelines for the project and how it will affect traffic flow at the site were not immediately available Wednesday.
