Pretrial set for McBride
Aug. 7 hearing set in historical sexual assaults case
A 74-year-old Peterborough man charged with historical sexual assault in Renfrew County late last year before further charges were laid earlier this year after more complainants came forward will return to court next month for judicial pre-trial.
Stan McBride Jr., the son of former city mayor Stan McBride, now faces more than 20 charges in connection with 10 complainants. He last appeared in court on July 12, where the matter was adjourned until Aug. 7 in Pembroke (Renfrew County) Ontario Court of Justice.
A judicial pre-trial is a hearing involving a judge, prosecutor and defence lawyer that generally aims to resolve legal issues before a trial begins.
McBride was first charged last December with attempted sexual assault and administering a noxious substance in a 1983 incident involving a 15-year-old boy at a seasonal property in South Algonquin Township, west of Barry’s Bay, police said.
At the time of the charges, investigators asked that anyone who was a victim of sexual assault come forward in the case.
More charges were then laid Feb. 13 after four men, who were between 17 and 18 at the time of the incidents between 1980 and 1983, reported incidents that happened at the same seasonal property in South Algonquin west of Barry’s Bay, Renfrew County OPP said.
McBride, who has appeared in Killaloe court June 7, April 26, March 8 and Jan. 11, was then additionally charged with three counts of sexual assault, one count of attempted sexual assault and four counts of administering a noxious substance.
Five complainants have come forward since then. Details including the specific charges – believed to be two counts per person – were not immediately available.
McBride Sr. was mayor from 1961 to 1962 and sheriff from 1962 until 1986, when he retired. The member of the Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame for swimming and weightlifting died from a stroke in 2005.
Realtor’s case back in court
The case of a Peterborough realtor, property owner and developer charged with sexual assault will return to court Aug. 2.
The case of Alket Kulla, of Rogers St., was addressed Tuesday before Justice of the Peace Jane Moffatt in Peterborough Ontario Court of Justice.
He was charged March 1 after city police said a local woman alleged a man sexually assaulted her at her city home on Feb. 20.
Kulla is being represented by city defence lawyer Dave McFadden. The matter was first addressed in court on March 23, and then May 18, 31 and June 14.

A man charged with attempted murder after a stabbing at the Anson House Peterborough Housing Corporation complex at 136 Anson St. on Feb. 14 will return to court later next week after appearing in provincial court Monday.
Robert Reginald Reay, 47, was last in court June 27 and May 25.
He knew the 59-year-old victim, who was taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre and then a Toronto hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries, city police said.
