New Celtic festival starts taking shape

- PAT MARCHEN

Excitement is building for the first ever Greenbridge Celtic Folkfest featuring Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy on August 25 and 26.

The grounds of the McCloskey property north of Keene are ready and the positions of three stages and three massive tents have been determined.

Entrance will be over the landmark green bridge visible from Heritage Line, but that is not the only bridge on the site. The Bridge to Cape Breton will replicate the actual bridge over the Canso Causeway in Sydney, Nova Scotia. On the other side will be Cape Breton-themed workshops, artisans and a stage ready for talent. Folks are encouraged to bring their own instruments for a little workout in a workshop.

The main stage is in a natural amphitheatre facing a gentle slope of well-groomed grass. Parking is not too far away, behind the spectators.

There will be an Irish pub called “Rory’s” and a place for the kids to hang out and have fun too. The food vendors are Keene Lions Club and Back Alley Barbecue of Norwood.

Tickets range from $30 to $100 and are available at Three Roads Chicken, Long and McQuade, Lakefield Foodland, and online at ticketfly.com, or call 1-888-7321682.

A Farmer’s Diary

John Graham Weir was born in Otonabee Township in 1844 and kept records from 1880 to 1925. His journals were donated to Trent Valley Archives by William and Juanita Mitchell, of Stoney Creek. 1892 August 3 Robert Mitchell and Willie Mitchell and James Simple and our own three men and myself were pulling peas. Robert Mitchell, Simple, and I pulled one and a half acres each and the rest about an acre each. 1892 August 8 Yesterday at three o’clock we attended the Orange Funeral of Thomas Robinson. About 240 Orangemen marched to the cemetery where I conducted the Orange Funeral service. Today Sherman, Mann, Walter Mitchell and James Simple helped Robert Mitchell to pull peas. I stayed at home and cut five acres of timothy for seed and four acres of oats with the binder.
