Litter left on causeway by anglers ‘disgraceful’: County

- EXAMINER STAFF

It’s “disgraceful” that people are dumping garbage along the James A. Gifford Causeway on Chemong Lake, Peterborough County corporate projects and services official Heather Wrightly said Wednesday.

“It is disgraceful that some people don’t honour and respect the beauty and nature of our region,” Wrightly stated in a release.

Bridgenorth resident Brad Sinclair, a real estate agent with Flat Rate Realty, raised the issue on Tuesday in a posting on his Facebook page.

He said the county should take steps to either hire students to clean up the mess or ban people from fishing off the causeway, citing dozens of styrofoam fishing worm containers that are littering the causeway.

Sinclair is calling on Selwyn Township Mayor Mary Smith, Deputy Mayor Sherry Senis and Smith Ward Coun. Gerry Herron to address the issue.

The causeway links Ennismore with Bridgenorth.

Wrightly states that the county’s waste management department can only remove waste in areas where public access is available.

The issue is expected to be brought up at the next county council meeting on Aug. 23.

“Any decision to restrict the use of the public spaces surrounding the causeway would have to come from council (in discussions with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and Selwyn Township) who meet on Aug. 23,” Wrightly added.
