Midget AA Tigers win Ajax Spartans tourney
The Peterborough Elmhirst Loggers Midget AA Tigers showed their pitching depth in allowing only eight runs in five games while going undefeated to win the Ajax Spartans Mega Baseball Tournament over the weekend. With catcher Owen Butler behind the plate, pitchers Callahan Phillips, Jacob Kempt, Liam O’NeillHawthorne, Brock Newell, Timmy Moloney and Connor Bondy proved to be too much for opposing teams. Strong fielding and timely hits also contributed to the Midget AA Tigers defeating Clarington 15-2, Ajax Select 7-0 and Woodstock 5-2 in round-robin play. The Tigers, managed by Tom Kempt, continued their solid play in the Sunday afternoon semifinal, beating Ajax Majors 14-1. In the Sunday night gold medal game, the Mississauga Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, which was interrupted by a 30-minute delay due to lightning in the area. When play resumed, the Peterborough Tigers were able to claw back with some timely hits and strong defence to earn a 5-3 win in the championship game.
Tournament MVP Brock Newell pitched a complete game for the win. Coaches Kayla Kempt and Chuck Phillips were pleased with the offensive and defensive play of position players Mick Moloney, Dariss Knott-Cox, Sam Knott, Aaron Toms, Andrew McGee, Sasha Harrison and Parker Bendall.
