Gender Journeys program returns
A program designed to support transgender and gender-diverse residents is returning to the city.
Gender Journeys is a peer-based, group support program. The groups provide information about transgender issues as well as opportunities for peer-to-peer connections, education, outreach, and support.
The Canadian Mental Health Association Haliburton (CMHA) Kawartha Pine Ridge ran a pilot of Gender Journeys between 2013-17. But it ended because they didn’t have the funds to keep it going.
Thanks to partnerships and financial backing from Trent University and the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough, Gender Journeys has be revived on a limited scale.
The program will be offered at two locations in the city starting in October and ending in March.
One group will run out of Trent, in collaboration with the Trent University Wellness Centre. The other will operate at the local CMHA, serving those who’re getting primary health services through the Peterborough 360 Clinic or the Peterborough Family Health Team.
The groups will be led by CHMA staff who’re transgender and are trained to give Gender Journeys education and support.
“We prioritize hiring transgender-identified individuals as Gender Journeys program staff, because they are uniquely positioned to understand transgender experiences and identities,” said Gordon Langill, director of programs and services at the local CMHA.
In addition to the two groups, some outreach and support will be offered to those who’re transgender and gender diverse in isolated circumstances, where access to services is difficult.
