See solar eclipse safely atop hill

- CAROLINE MCCONNELL

Safely watch the partial solar eclipse today with the Peter borough Astronomical Association (PAA) on Armour Hill. PAA members will have on hand safe solar viewing equipment so you don’t hurt your eyes viewing this celestial event.

Solar eclipses, even partial solar eclipses such as what will happen today, can damage your eyes if viewed improperly even for a second. Unlike lunar eclipses that don’t require special viewing equipment to protect your eyes, solar eclipses require the use of proper safety equipment, such as eclipse glasses.

During the eclipse, which will happen in the early afternoon, the moon will partially cover the face of the sun. From our location in and around Peterborough, the sun will be covered about 67 per cent.

A solar eclipse occurs periodically when the moon gets between the sun and the Earth. The next time North America will be able to see the moon completely cover the sun, causing a total solar eclipse, will be April 8, 2024.

The eclipse process will start in Peterborough at 1:12 p.m., with the sun being midway through the eclipse and maximum coverage by 2:33 p.m. Then the moon will reveal more of the sun’s disk until the eclipse ends at 3:49 p.m.

Weather may be a factor, with the forecast calling for clouds and showers, which would affect visibility.

The Peterborough Astronomical Association (PAA) regularly meets at the Rotary Education Centre Guest Services Building at Riverview Park and Zoo on the first Friday of the month at 7:30 p.m., from September to June. Meetings include guest speakers, discussions of club and stargazing matters, and stargazing outings. New members are always welcome. TVA Open House

Trent Valley Archives (TVA) is hosting an Open House Saturday, Sept 9 from 1 until 4 p.m. to celebrate their past year’s accomplishments. Those attending will have the opportunity to access digitized scans of Lakefield newspapers from bygone days, learn how the TVA is preserving home movies and have a look at the Peterborough Rotary Club archival collection.

See how easy it is to search old Lakefield newspapers online on the TVA computers.

Students have been very busy digitizing this content, eliminating the need to manually look at a printed copy or laboriously work through a microfilm record.

You will also be able to check out and view various home movie collections the TVA has acquired. Learn how they inspect and preserve them.

The third display focuses on the recently donated Peterborough Rotary Collection featuring original documents of incorporation, papers relating to the formation of the Rotary Trail and many photos dating from the club’s founding in 1921.

Come out and investigate these and the other special collections from across five counties that are housed at the Archives, the genealogical resources that continue to improve and the growing resources in the bookstore that are available for purchase.

Refreshments will be available during the event. TVA is located at 567 Carnegie Ave.
