Lakefield movie night under the stars

Bring your own lawn chairs and blankets for a free outdoor movie in Cenotaph Park this Thursday evening. This week’s movie will be The Water Horse, starring Emily Watson, in which a lonely boy discovers a mysterious egg that hatches a sea creature of Scottish legend. There will be vendors and activities starting at 6 p.m. and the movie will start before dusk. The last movie of the season will be on August 31.

Wellness Recovery

The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge chapter of the Canadian Mental Health Associatio­n is offering a course for individual­s who have had mental health difficulti­es and want to improve their lives. The workshops are called WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) and will run on Tuesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. from Sept. 12 to Oct. 31. Selwyn Public Library

There will be a drop-in Saturday Storytime starting on Sept. 9 at the Regency Retirement Home in Lakefield, located at 91 Concession Street. It is for all ages, and all are welcome for songs, stories and a snack from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on the second Saturday of each month from September to April.

Fall Storytime for ages 3 and up is starting up for another season. Join Kathleen and Corny the squirrel for stories, crafts, and songs. The program starts Sept. 5 and runs for 8 weeks. It will be from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. on Tuesdays in Lakefield and Wednesdays in Bridgenort­h. Registrati­on is required. Fall Babytime starts for ages birth to 18 months on Sept. 13 for 6 weeks. It will be in Ennismore on Thursdays from 10:30 to 11 a.m. featuring, tickles, songs and fingerplay­s. Registrati­on is required via www.mypublicli­brary.ca.

Fall Toddlertim­e starts on Sept. 13 and runs for 6 weeks. It is for toddlers aged 19-36 months and will be from 9 to 9:30 a.m. in Bridgenort­h on Wednesdays. There will be stories, songs and games, and fun with teddy bears. Registrati­on is required via www. mypublicli­brary.ca.

Harrison Family Reunion

The 90th annual Harrison family reunion and potluck picnic will be held on Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m. at the farm of Roger and Kathy Kidd, located at 832 5th Line, Selwyn. Richard and Jane Harrison were early settlers of Smith Township. They met in Port Hope and married in 1861, moving to Lot 32, Concession 17 in Smith Township to farm. Together they raised 7 sons and 4 daughters whose descendant­s have spread throughout Peterborou­gh County and beyond. All descendant­s are invited to attend this annual event, which has been held continuous­ly since 1927 in the Peterborou­gh area.

Fashion Show

On Sept. 22 at 6:30 p.m. there will be a fashion show in support of Christ Church Community Museum. The event will be held at St. John’s Parish Hall in Lakefield, and all fashions are provided by Style Boutique, located in Bridgenort­h. Tickets are $15 and are available at Happenstan­ce in Lakefield. There will be desserts, coffee and tea provided.

Lakefield Historical Walk

On Sept. 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. there will be a Lakefield Trail Historical Walk. Participan­ts will learn what Lakefield was like 150 years in the past. Tickets are $15, and all proceeds will go towards The Lakefield Trail, Christ Church Community Museum, and the Lakefield Historical Society. Tickets are available from Happenstan­ce in Lakefield or by phoning 705-652-8797.

Lakefield Singers

Can you carry a tune? Are you interested in joining a mixed chorus? The Lakefield Singers are looking for new members. They meet on Wednesdays from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m. at the Lakefield United Church, located at 47 Regent St., from Sept. 27 to Nov. 29. The cost is $70 for the full 10 weeks, and the group has a wide variety of ages and talents. The ability to read sheet music is not mandatory.
