The Peterborough Lawn Bowling Club is excited to be hosting the Canadian Senior Triples Championship beginning Thursday and running through to Wednesday Aug 30. Twenty teams of from across Canada will be participating in both Men’s and Women’s Divisions. Each day of competition features two draws with tie breaker games scheduled for the afternoon of Tuesday Aug 29. Opening Ceremonies take place Friday at 9 a.m. and medal matches begin Wed Aug 30 at 9 a.m. Everyone is welcome to come a watch a game, or two. The Lawn Bowling Club is located at 577 McDonnel St.

Lawn bowling has a long history in Peterborough. The club dates back to April 1901. It was first located at the corner of Simcoe and Aylmer Streets and had 94 bowlers. Yearly registration was only $2. In 1904, the club moved to Brock and Aylmer Streets, the current location of Fleming Park, where according to Club Archivist Doris Nickson, “members played on postage stamp greens.” In 1929, the Club moved to its current location on McDonnel St. A clubhouse was built at an approximate cost of $10 000. Women were permitted to play beginning in the 1940s, provided they were wearing long skirts and games were scheduled in the daytime. By 2004, the Club had 180 members who enjoyed a choice of 6 leagues. Unfortunately, the Clubhouse basement was devastated in July of that year during the great flood. In 2010, a new clubhouse, the McDonnel Street Activity Centre, was constructed in partnership with the Whitlaw-Mariners Seniors Club.
