It’s time to Strutt Your Mutt for Humane Society

- CAROLINE MCCONNELL Northcrest_column@yahoo.ca

The Peterborough Humane Society is holding their 5th annual Strutt Your Mutt walk Sunday, Sept. 24 at Beavermead Park. The walk will include 1 km and 2.5 km options. Registration takes place at 10 a.m.; the walk begins at 11 a.m. Dogs are welcome, so you can bring yours along to the walk. Just remember, participating dogs should enjoy being around people and other dogs and must be kept on a leash six feet or shorter at all times. Retractable leashes are not allowed.

Money raised will help the Peterborough Humane Society continue to improve the lives of animals through rescuing, providing shelter, healing, facilitating adoption and reducing pet overpopulation. In the past year they have provided care to over 1600 animals and anticipate that in the upcoming year over 2000 animals will need care at the shelter.

The Strutt your Mutt event will also include a microchip clinic, flydog demonstrations, games for dogs, and lunch from Montana’s. Lots of fun will be insured with the live music, vendors, swag bags, and face painting.

You have lots of time to get registered and start fundraising. Register as an individual or get together a team of five or more people. Teams can create their own online fundraising page. There will be prizes awarded to the top fundraisers, and all participants who raise a minimum of $50 will receive a Strutt Your Mutt water bottle. Pledge forms are available to download online or may be picked up at the Humane Society, 385 Lansdowne St. E.

If you can’t make the walk, you can still help the Humane Society by making a donation. And if you know someone who is participating, your donation can be applied to a specific participant or team’s fundraising goal.

This is how your donation can help: a donation of $34.64 covers the cost of caring for a cat at the shelter for one day; $49.95 covers the cost of caring for a dog at the shelter for one day; $75.23 covers the average cost of spaying or neutering a cat at the shelter; $125 covers the average cost of spaying or neutering a dog at the shelter; $245 covers the cost of a month’s worth of cat litter used at the shelter; $500 covers an emergency examination of an injured or ill animal that needs immediate care (on the average 20 emergency vet visits are made each month at the shelter); and a $1,000 donation covers the average monthly cost of vaccinations provided at the shelter.

The event also offers sponsorship and vendor opportunities. For $25 and a prize donation, vendors get space at the event, their logo and a link listed on the event page, and mention on social media. Sponsorship opportunities are also available, with many benefits, including pre and post-event recognition.

Volunteers are also needed to help out at the walk.
