Kansas City Confederate memorial to be moved after vandalism

Parks officials in Kansas City, Miss., say an 83-year-old Confederate memorial will be removed after it was vandalized.

The Missouri Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy asked Kansas City Parks and Recreation officials to remove the monument from its current location to a place of safety. That request came after someone painted what appeared to be a red hammer and sickle on the “Loyal Women of the Old South” memorial late Friday or early Saturday.

Parks officials said Saturday the monument would be removed soon.

The memorial along one of the city’s main streets was erected in 1934 to recognize women who supported the Confederacy. It was a gift from the United Daughters of the Confederacy. It had been at its current location since 1958.

Man arrested vandalizing Indianapolis Confederate monument

Police have arrested a man who they say damaged a Confederate monument at an Indianapolis park with a hammer.

Marion County Jail records show 30-year-old Anthony Ventura was being held Sunday on a charge of criminal mischief.

Police arrested him Saturday afternoon in Garfield Park on the city’s south side, where an 11-meter tall granite tower has plaques listing the names of 1,616 Confederate prisoners who died while held at the city’s Camp Morton.

Police say the hammer blows chipped pieces off of the monument.

The vandalism came days after city officials began discussing whether the monument should be moved. Cities nationwide are removing Confederacy-related monuments following a deadly white-nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

‘Nazis’ spray-painted on Robert E. Lee statue in Dallas

Dallas police officials say a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee has been vandalized.

The Dallas Morning News reported a crew of city workers went to Lee Park early Saturday to power-wash the spray-painted word “Nazis” off of the statue, one of three Confederate monuments in the city. A police spokeswoman says extra patrols will be in the park to prevent further vandalism.

City officials have been discussing whether to remove or relocate the city’s Confederate statues, a conversation hastened by violence that broke out in Charlottesville, Va., last weekend.

The city’s four black city councilmen held a joint news conference Friday to say they supported removing the statues as a way to start healing the city’s racist past.
