Hospice offers look at volunteering

- CAROLINE MCCONNELL

Hospice Peterborough is offering an introductory afternoon orientation session in September to provide the community with an opportunity to learn more about volunteering with the organization.

Interested individuals can attend either Thursday, Sept. 7 or Tuesday, Sept. 12. Enrollment is limited; please call to register.

An interview process will be held following the orientation sessions and successful candidates will be invited to join the Hospice volunteer training. The fall training will begin in October and run for ten weeks (three hours weekly in the afternoon).

The 30-hour training series is designed for people interested in providing support for individuals and families living with, or affected by life-threatening illness. The course explores issues related to death and dying, supporting people who are grieving and care for the caregiver. This course will introduce you to the concepts of hospice palliative care and prepare you for supporting individuals following the guidelines of Hospice’s Philosophy of Care.

For more information or to register for one of the orientation sessions contact Paula Greenwood, Manager of Volunteer Services by phone 705742-4042 or email pgreenwood@ hospicepeterborough.org.

Blood donor reward

Canadian Blood Services is holding a Blood Donor Clinic Saturday, Sept. 9 and anyone who donates blood at that clinic will receive an invitation to the preview show of Dracula, a new adaptation written by Stephen Dietz, at The Peterborough Theatre Guild Thursday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m.

The blood donor clinic runs from 8 a.m. until noon. Canadian Blood Services is located at 55 George St. To add to the fun, the cast of Dracula will attend the clinic.

Scholarship opportunity

Do you know someone heading off to study at Trent University or Fleming College this fall? If one of their parents a union member, they could be eligible for the new Peterborough and District Labour Council’s (PDLC) $500 scholarship. But get your application in; the deadline to apply is Tuesday, Sept. 5. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide monetary assistance to a student who demonstrates an appreciation of the role of labour and to award the scholarship in honour of distinguished trade union activists who have made a significant contribution to the life and growth of the labour movement in Peterborough County.

Eligible candidates must be a member, or the dependent of a member, of a union local that is affiliated in good standing with the PDLC; enrolled for September 2017 for their first year of full-time study, leading to a diploma, degree or certificate from Fleming College or Trent University; not fully funded for tuition, fees, and books from other sources; have no prior post-secondary studies; and be a current resident of Peterborough County.

Selection of the bursary winner will be based on a brief résumé outlining non-academic interests and activities, such as community or political involvement as well as goals for the future; evidence of understanding of the role and significance of the Canadian labour movement; a reference letter; and proof of enrolment. For more information, contact Marion Burton, president of PDLC, at marionburton@nexicom.net or 705-868-7352.
