A farmer’s diary

Otonabee farmer John Graham Weir kept daily journals from 1880 until 1925. They are now at Trent Valley Archives.

1889 Aug. 31, Sat.

Smiley and John were working for Willie Graham all day. In the forenoon I was horse raking some oat ground. In the afternoon I was reaping flax and I never cut anything so hard with the reaper. This is the first whole week of the dry weather this summer. 1891 Aug. 2, Sat.

We finished our harvest this evening. Everything is snug in the barns. 1891 Sept. 4

We were threshing wheat and oats in the frame barn and we got a good days work. The three Moncrief brothers are owners of the mill and they are good men. 1891 Sept. 5 About nine o’clock this morning we finished threshing the grain in the frame barn. The men had an early dinner and went away. This afternoon we sowed two bushels of wheat and four bushels of rye in field No. 1.
