Market farmers have to work together: vendor
Re: “Local or Not? Vendor Won’t Say at Peterborough Farmers’ Market.”, Aug. 21, 2017
In the article it states that I have challenged the accuracy of previous Examiner reports. And I do. I have never been interviewed by Joelle Kovach or anyone from The Peterborough Examiner! Her alleged interview with “me” is not only false but a defamation of my character!
As far as the operations of farmers markets across Ontario or the world for that matter, the business practices of each market is solely up to them. Each market creates their own rules and regulations to work for their area.
People come to a farmers market to enjoy a friendly inviting atmosphere, an abundance of produce, unique foods and beverages, crafts, giftware etc. They want a vast selection and most importantly an atmosphere free from stress and angst.
Unfortunately the Peterborough Farmers’ Market has been tainted with negativity spawned by a few vendors with ulterior motives. A market such as this has room for everyone and we need everyone to help create what our consumers are looking for. Without this mindset, the market will diminish, the customers will simply stop coming.
Mrs. Stapleton and her daughter’s experience with Mr. Dunn. Is the type of behaviour and actions that contribute to a poor environment for the consumers, sellers and visitors!
I agree wholeheartedly with Mrs. Stapleton’s statement, “that’s how farmers markets operate, farmers sell for one another. We all work together - that’s what farmers do.”
The challenges that face any retailers are the same as farmers. Worsened by challenging weather and varying heat units affecting maturity across the province. Trying to create enough products to bring to market on your own is virtually impossible without the help of others. I have been a vendor at the Peterborough Farmers Market for 50 years!
Working together with family, friends and having good professional relationships with fellow farmers is how markets have been run throughout history.
