Causeway mess goes beyond littering

-

I’ve read your story on the garbage crisis on the causeway and looked at the photographs. I would bet a lot of money that most of that garbage has been thrown out of the windows of passing vehicles. When I visited the causeway to observe the activities there on Aug. 19, I witnessed a few family groups fishing in a very harmonious way, enjoying the natural setting and of course catching a few panfish. There was no evidence of takeout containers strewn on the areas I visited. None of the people enjoying the outdoors was sipping coffee from takeout containers nor eating burgers or other wrapped takeout foods. I did see a pile of refuse in the bins that are provided which included several large minnow boxes, there seemed to be no place to put the minnow boxes as they are cumbersome, an old pair of runners had been left behind by someone, could it have been one of the many people who put their boat in their water at that makeshift ramp?

As a partial solution to this situation I suggest that the manufacturers of the refuse be fined for the litter they create. Or, it could be possible to offer refunds on takeout packaging, cardboard boxes and the plastic bottles that water comes in.

Why don’t the parties involved, each host town, Bridgenorth and Ennismore and the Township and County and OFAH get together and develop a plan to improve the fishing for those using the causeway? I envision a a pier built out into the lake where 50 or more fish persons can enjoy their sport more comfortably. Instead of chasing this group of people away those involved should look on them as a resource and welcome them to our area, we are fortunate to have them visit.

It seems to me that the group of people being targeted have no voice in these matters, yet they are the ones affected, will others stand up and speak on their behalf. There is more than an underlying degree of hatred festering here and I am ashamed again, like I was many years ago when signs were put up on the causeway in an Asian script only.
