Fleming College turns 50
It’s back-to-school time not only for young people, but for adults as well with a full slate of continuing education in-class and online courses offered at Fleming College this fall. Courses are aimed at those still working who wish to enhance their careers as well as retirees and others who might want to explore general interest courses.
Lifelong learning is important for everyone, according to Betsy Healey, marketing co-ordinator.
“Nearly every profession has ongoing education and training requirements relating to the advances in professional practice, the nature of technological change, or corollary requirements such as safety regulations,” says Healey. “Enhanced leadership capacity throughout all levels of an organization is increasingly viewed as a competitive differentiator for companies and institutions.”
This fall Fleming is offering four new online certificate courses in healthcare. The Gerontology Multi Disciplinary Grad Certificate and the Rural and Remote Nursing are for those already registered with the College of Nurses. The Patient Navigator Program is open to students who are regulated health care professionals with a diploma or a degree. The Palliative Care Program is open to anyone with a high school diploma who may be working or volunteering within palliative care.
“We offer a wide range of inclass and online business courses as well as workshops that help participants stay current in their field,” continues Healey. “One of the programs that we receive exceptional feedback on is our PEAK Leadership training which is an in-depth development program designed to transform new managers into confident problem-solvers and leaders. We also offer specializations in continuous improvement and creative problem-solving.”
Fleming is offering new Body-Centered Coaching courses for those who want to enhance their previous coaching or psychotherapy training in assisting clients to move forward Fleming also offers numerous workshops for supervisors and managers throughout the year facilitated by expert instructors.
“Those who have retired have different expectations of their present and future roles in the job market than past generations,” continues Healey. “Some are also not fully exiting the job market: retirees enjoy retraining opportunities so that they can use a lifetime of experience to work in fields of their choosing and in ways that suit an active lifestyle.”
General interest courses include cooking classes such as Mediterranean 101 and Cooking with Your Partner that help you experience stress-free creative time in the kitchen. They also offer six-week Photography classes, Fine Art classes at the Haliburton School of Art + Design, and language classes for beginners, such as Conversational French, Conversational Spanish and ASL.
Fleming offers both in-class and on-line courses in the trades including the Ministry of Labour approved Working at Heights Certification at the Skilled Trades Centre. The college also offers welding courses and is an approved examination provider for certain TSSA Exams. The Home Inspection Certificate is offered online starting on September 12. They are also continuing to offer motorcycle and Can-Am Spyder training courses throughout the month of September.
Fleming’s 50th anniversary celebrations continue on Sept. 21 at the Peterborough Petes’ home opener where Fleming representatives will drop the puck as well as take part in other activities during the game. There will be a party at the Sutherland Campus on Sept. 22 from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with live entertainment, special guests, soccer games and more. Those who would like to attend can RSVP on Eventbrite.
