Sinopoli chasing two pass reception records

- -- Don Brennan, Postmedia Network

Peterborough native Brad Sinopoli is leading the Canadian Football League with 71 catches so far this season for the Ottawa Redblacks. The Crestwood Secondary School graduate, who is also third in the league with 810 receiving yards, is chasing two records for catching. Sinopoli, who had seven catches in Montreal last week, is 23 receptions from tying the Ottawa franchise mark of 94, set by Marc Lewis in 1987. He’s also 41 grabs shy of equalling the record for most catches by a Canadian, held by former Montreal Alouettes star Ben Cahoon. To set the new Canadian standard, Sinopoli needs to average six catches per game the rest of the way. “It’s hard to get two,” Sinopoli insisted. After a woeful first half, the defending Grey Cup champion Redblacks have gone on a winning streak and now lead the CFL East. Waking up on Tuesday morning to find that his team was still in first place was a pleasant surprise for Sinopoli. He didn’t catch all of the previous night’s Hamilton-Toronto game, as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ first win of the season was delayed by a thunderstorm and he is “an early to bed guy.” The Labour Day victory kept the Redblacks (4-6-1) atop the East Division, one point up on the Argos (4-7). “That’s a thing we talked about when we were down, you just try to keep pace with what’s going on in your division,” Sinopoli said. “That’s all you can focus on. Obviously you need some help and we’ve got that right now. We’re in a good spot.” The Redblacks host the Ticats at 6 p.m. Saturday.
