Former Pete named coach
Former Peterborough Petes defenceman Shawn Evans has been named associate coach for the Canada East entry into the 2017 World Junior A Challenge, Hockey Canada announced on Thursday.
Evans, 52, will join head coach Patrice Bosch, head coach and general manager of the LHJQ’s Inouk de Granby. The tournament is Dec. 10 to 16 at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre in Truro, N.S. Evans is head coach/GM of the Truro Bearcats of the Maritime Hockey League). The rest of the staff consists of assistant coach Martin Dagenais, head coach/ GM of the Ottawa Jr. Senators, goaltending coach Marty Abrams, head coach/GM of the Trenton Golden Hawks, and video coach John Dean, head coach of the Toronto Patriots.
Evans set Petes scoring records for defencemen between 198285 that may never be matched. He had 109 points including 88 assists in the 1983-84 season. He was a second-round draft pick of the New Jersey Devils in 1983. Evans will make his first international appearance at the 2017 World Junior A Challenge. He has been head coach/GM of the Bearcats since 2002, winning MHL championships in 2005, 2007, 2014 and 2017. His team reached the RBC Cup, Canada’s National Junior A Championship in 2013.
Evans played 15 seasons of professional hockey from 1985-99 including nine NHL games with the St. Louis Blues and New York Islanders and stops in the IHL, AHL, ECHL, UHL, Switzerland and Italy.
He was also head coach of the Mohawk Valley Prowlers (UHL) and Dartmouth Blizzard (MJAHL), and an assistant coach with the Lowell Lock Monsters (AHL).
