It’s no secret that one of the best things about living in this part of the country is getting to experience the four seasons in both their raw and tame forms.

There are so many reasons why golf in this part of Ontario is at its best in September and October. If you can live with a few extra lost balls due to fallen leaves, and the occasional frost delay, you will find that getting out for even nine holes on the right fall day is golf and fresh air at its finest.

Any tension or anxiety related to lowering your handicap or winning that two-man match is all but gone. And the scenery is never better, especially on some of the older courses that are chock full of old deciduous trees that turn many shades of yellow, orange and red.

Fall is also great time to hop in your car with your favourite foursome and sample a course you have been wanting to play for some time, but summer holidays and club matches just keep getting in the way of.

One of the best perks of belonging to a golf club is having your head pro help to set up tee times Hole No. 4 at the Westmount Golf and Country Club in Kitchener, oil on canvas by Tony Harris. at otherwise private courses you may have thought were out of reach. Whether your own club has some sort of special arrangement with sister clubs or not, it’s always worth a try.

If you’re not in the mood to venture to the GTA and beyond, how about checking out Six Foot Bay in Buckhorn where the Hall family has this gem in tip top condition, as always, or The Briars in Jackson Point, or Port Hope GC just 30 minutes down County Road 28 on Lake Ontario.

And although we are blessed to live, work and play in our own cottage country, fall is also a great time to venture to that “other” cottage country called Muskoka, especially mid-week. If you haven’t played Muskoka Bay, Lake Joseph or Bigwin Island you don’t know what you’re missing. If you love Wildfire you will love Rocky Crest, the course Tom McBroom completed just before he designed the Stoney Lake course.

It certainly hasn’t been a great summer from a weather perspective. While both east and west coasts of our country have enjoyed record hot, dry summers, the central regions have received more rain than any year in recent memory. But what goes around comes around.

I have always said that the most consistently great weather in our region happens the second and third weeks of September. We may just be in the middle of such a spell right now.

Golf in central Ontario this time of year is one of a kind. We have our own version of Augusta National’s azaleas and Pebble Beach’s lone cypress tree blossoming right before our eyes.

People from all over the world are flocking to Algonquin Park this month and next to experience a rainbow of colours unmatched anywhere on the planet. How long before they realize it’s our golf courses where the true beauty lies?

May you hit ‘em well between now and when the snow flies. Go Petes Go. The following are results from Peterborough Lawn Bowling Club league play.
