Love local business expo returns this week
The Love Local Ptbo Business Expo, the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce’s annual trade show, takes place on Wednesday from noon until 7 p.m. at the Morrow Building, beside the Memorial Centre at 151 Lansdowne St. W. The show is open to the business community and the general public, with free admission and parking.
There will be more than 110 exhibitors from a wide range of sectors, including professional services, health and wellness, energy, publishing, media, financial services, tech, hospitality and more.
“Every year our attendance grows and we are expecting over 1000 people to attend the show this year,” says Karen August, membership services co-ordinator.
Once again there will be a series of themed zones - a Holistic Health and Wellness zone, the Start and Grow zone sponsored by the Greater Peterborough Economic Development, the Innovation Zone sponsored by the Innovation Cluster and the Green Business zone sponsored by Peterborough Utilities. Visitors can meet professionals in each area.
“New this year, in the Green Business zone, is the Water Wagon where people can refill their water bottles,” says August. “There is no charge for water and we hope that taking this important step will reduce the use of disposable bottles and make the show a little ‘greener’.”
The Networking café returns again, this year with the city as a sponsor. Free tea and coffee will be available all day. A selection of lunches will also be available for purchase in the café. Cogeco is providing free WIFI in the building. Smithavens Brewing company is selling their locally produced beers on tap.
“What makes this year’s event unique is how we are bringing together the local business community under one roof while showcasing and celebrating the assets they provide,” continues August. “It is a relaxed and fun atmosphere in which to ask businesses important questions and experience their products and services. We’re excited for the many door prizes which will be awarded – including a Lenovo Notepad and an iPad.”

Interactive Learning
Fleming College’s Early Childhood Education students are launching this year’s Interactive Learning with Children and Families program for families with children eight months to six years old along with their parents/caregivers. Each week the children will play in a creatively designed space that connects with nature, is child-centred, and builds on children’s curiosity. While children are engaged, families enjoy an interactive workshop.
The program runs Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday mornings between October 3 and December 7. Families attend one morning a week from 9:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. The cost is $60 per child for eight weeks and will be held at Emmanuel United Church, 534 George St. N. For more information, please visit flemingchildrensprogram.wordpress.com or email FlemingECE@flemingcollege.ca.
Canoe Museum
It will be a busy fall at the Canadian Canoe Museum, 910 Monaghan Rd. Visitors from now until October 2 are invited to view the construction of a traditional Gitigan Ziibi-style birch bark canoe by Chuck Commanda. When he was young, Commanda helped his grandparents, the late William and Mary Commanda, to build many canoes that are now part of the museum’s collection. He will talk about the project and share his personal history.
There will be a Family Paddling Day on September 30 to view the fall colours along the canal at the Lift Lock. Contact paddle@canoemuseum.ca or call 705-748-9153 ext. 210 for more information.
Books and Brunch with author John Boyko will take place on Sunday, October 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Elmhirst’s Resort on Rice Lake. In conversation with James Raffan, Boyko will talk about his new book Sir John’s Echo: The Voice for a Stronger Canada. Commissioned by Dundurn Press as part of a series on the occasion of Canada’s 150th anniversary, the book makes the case for a strong federal government as envisioned by Macdonald. In this, his seventh book, Boyko looks at historical evidence to support his position. Boyko is the retired dean of history at Lakefield College School.
Tickets are $75 each and limited seating is available. For more information contact: christina.skuce@canoemuseum.ca or call 705-7489153 ext. 211.
