Crowley promising a knockout in Saturday bout
PETES PIECES
Cody Crowley promised a knockout win Saturday in front of Petes fans Thursday night.
Crowley and his opponent Richard Holmes of Jamaica dropped the ceremonial faceoff prior to the Petes game against Oshawa.
“Who wants to see me knock this punk out?” Crowley said, at centre ice. “On Saturday night I promise you a knockout.”
Crowley, 12-0 with six knockouts, puts his Canadian Professional Boxing Council super-welterweight international title on the line against Holmes, 14-7 with eight knockouts, at the Memorial Centre. The six-bout card begins at 7 p.m.
The two will also participate in a weigh-in that is open to the public Friday at The Social Pub on George St., beginning at 6 p.m.
Cogeco TV is going to show Crowley’s fight card live on YourTV cable channel 10 (HD 700). They will show the Petes’ Saturday night game against the Niagara IceDogs from St. Catharines on tape delay following the Crowley fight.
Tippett impressing the Panthers
Peterborough native Owen Tippett is making a serious pitch to crack the Florida Panthers opening night lineup.
The 18-year-old forward remains with the Panthers following their latest round of cuts with the NHL season less than a week away. Tippett, the 10th overall pick in June’s NHL Entry Draft, had 44 goals and 75 points for the Mississauga Steelheads last season. He’s already signed an NHL entry-level contract.
“I love what I see (from Tippett),” Panthers head coach Bob Boughner told Florida media. “You can’t teach his offence…and this team needs to score more goals. He’s got a chance.”
Korostelev survives cuts
Potential Petes overage forward Nikita Korostelev survived the first-round of cuts at AHL Toronto Marlies camp on Thursday.
Petes GM Mike Oke said he’s heard no news on Korostelev’s bid to sign a pro contract. Oke said the picture could become clearer next week. Korostelev is currently a free agent.
Hanna to Quebec
Peterborough native Quinn Hanna has joined the QMJHL’s Blainville-Bosbriand Armada after clearing OHL waivers this week, according to an OHL source.
The defenceman was released by the Guelph Storm after one season. The Armada are ranked fifth overall in this week’s CHL Top 10 rankings.
Roster notes
Tyler Rollo (strep throat) and Matyas Svoboda (upper body) returned to the Petes lineup after missing opening night last week.
Matt Timms missed his first game with a broken bone in his foot. The timetable for his return is uncertain at this time. Rookies Chad Denault and John ParkerJones were scratched due to numbers.
The injury to Timms means the Petes will dress three rookie blue-liners in his absence – Gleb Babintsev, Adrian Beraldo and Matt McNamara.
“I mentioned to them (Wednesday) night this is a glorious opportunity for some guys,” said Petes head coach Jody Hull.
“At the same time, a lot more has to be asked of our forwards in terms of tracking pucks and coming back into our zone and helping out. A little bit more emphasis has to be put on our own zone more so than just relying on scoring goals.”
