The Crestwood Mustangs junior football team got back on the winning track Thursday afternoon.

The Mustangs rebounded from Friday’s season opening 20-10 loss to the Adam Scott Lions by defeating the Fenelon Falls Falcons 35-0 at Crestwood Secondary School.

Oliver Hazelwood, Owen Peterson, Connor Batley, Blake Westnut and Drew Smith scored touchdowns while Hayden McIlmoyle kicked five converts.

“The first junior game of the season is always tough,” said Mustangs coach Blaine Meek. “There are always a lot of kids who haven’t played and now you’re depending on them to do certain things so it’s always a bit confusing and a bit disorganized. Today was much better. We had a little more discipline on both sides of the ball and we were able to settle things down when we needed to.”

Meek said he’s still trying to determine what his group is capable of this season.

“I think we have the bones to be a good team but there is a lot that goes into that. I think we have the components to be a good, competitive team but it’s so early to tell,” he said.

He certainly saw plenty of improvement over their game one performance.

“We got off the ball really well on both sides of the ball,” he said.
