When Spanish Flu came to Peterborough
The October meeting of the Peterborough Historical Society takes place Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and guest speaker Dale Standen will discuss Peterborough, the Spanish Flu and the Challenge of Contagious Disease in the Era of the First World War. Standen is a Professor Emeritus of History at Trent University.
The year 2018 will mark the 100th anniversary of the Spanish Influenza pandemic, which is estimated to have killed 50,000 in Canada. No community escaped the Spanish Flu and this lecture will discuss how Peterborough handled contagious diseases in the final months of the First World War.

Trent Film Society
A public screening of Trick ‘r Treat (2007, rated R) directed by Michael Dougherty, presented by the Trent Film Society, takes place Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Artspace, 378 Aylmer St. For more information, visit the Trent Film Society Facebook page. This is event is free and all are welcome.
Public Energy
The public is invited to attend Nogojiwanong: Rite of Spring, scheduled Thursday and Friday beginning at 6 p.m. These performances are dance works by Public Work’s artist-in-residence and choreographer Brian Solomon, and performed by community members and professional dance artists, taught via an open rehearsal and workshop process.
The performance is a re-envisioning of the 1913 early modern ballet Rite of Spring via a contemporary indigenous lens. It will take place on the site of an Anishnaabe burial in downtown Peterborough located at the Brock Street Parking Lot, 190 Brock Street. Downtown Ghostwalks
Get into the Hallowe’en spirit with a Downtown Ghost Walk presented by Trent Valley Archives. These walks introduce the eerie tales behind many of Peterborough’s public buildings while travelling by lantern light in the company of a costumed guide through the backstreets of downtown. Ghost Walks are scheduled for Thursday and Friday this week, and Oct. 23 to Oct. 26. Tours begin at 7 p.m. and last about 2 hours. English Country Dancers
The Peterborough English Country Dancers are hosting a Community Dance and Potluck, Saturday at St. John’s Anglican Church, 99 Brock St. Dances will be called by Cathy Dueck and the evening includes live music led by Linda Clark. The potluck begins at 6 p.m. and dancing begins at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10 per person, $5 for full time students, and children 12 and under are free. The Volunteers of Hutchison House Museum are hosting an elegant Victorian Tea on Sunday, beginning at 2:30 p.m. A light lunch of savories, sweets and tea will be served in the historic Keeping Room.
