More names to be added to Wall of Honour

- EXAMINER STAFF

The city is looking for more overlooked names to add to the Veterans Wall of Honour at the Peterborough Cenotaph in Confederation Square.

The wall memorializes the citizens of Peterborough city and county who served with the Canadian Forces in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War.

When the wall was created in 2010, the city and a group of volunteers worked to ensure that all the names of those who served were included. More than 10,000 names were collected and inscribed on the wall, according to a release from the city.

Since the dedication, a number of names have surfaced which were missed on the original lists, the release states.

In the spring the city will add all the verified missed names to the memorial, the release states.

Anyone with information about a veteran who meets the original criteria for inclusion on the wall can contact the city’s heritage preservation office.

The deadline to submitted new names is Jan. 31.

This will be the only time that names will be added to the wall, the release states.

For inclusion on the Wall of Honour, at least one of the following criteria must be met:

1. The enlisted person must have been born in Peterborough city or county, or,

2. The person must have enlisted in the city or the county, including those who came from other communities and enlisted in the city or county; or,

3. After discharge the person must have moved to the city or county prior to Dec. 31, 1970 and remained a permanent resident from that date forward.

“The Wall of Honour is a way for our community to remember the service and sacrifice of Canadians who served our country in times of war. We have a duty to remember,” Mayor Daryl Bennett stated in the release.

To submit a name for inclusion, contact: Erik Hanson, heritage resources co-ordinator, community services department, arts, culture and heritage division

Open house tonight

The city is holding a public open house on Tuesday on a plan to add sidewalks along three streets in the city’s east end.

The public open house is slated from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Monsignor O’Donoghue School at 2400 Marsale Dr.

City council decided Oct. 2 to ask city staff to hold a public meeting to receive comments or suggestions about the sidewalk project.

The sidewalks are proposed on both sides of Foxmeadow Road, Easthill Drive and Meadowview Road where they are currently missing with the aim of improving pedestrian safety in the Monsignor O’Donoghue School neighbourhood.

People also have until Nov. 2 to submit comments about the project to: Sue Sauve, transportation demand management planner at City of Peterborough, 500 George St. N., Peterborough, Ont., K9H 3R9; by phone at 705-742-7777 ext. 1485; by fax at 705-876-4621; or by email at ssauve@peterborough.ca.
