Peterborough needs a smarter cycling strategy
To sum up the GreenUP article in Wednesday’s Examiner, “Cycling in any Weather,” there is no such thing as bad weather - just bad clothing.
I just returned from visiting my son in Vancouver who cycles to and from work 365 days a year. The weather there can be no picnic, with steady rain for weeks at a time.
What impressed me most, was the bikeshare stations everywhere throughout Vancouver where visitors can rent a bike for $9.50 a day and drop it off at several different locations throughout the city. Bikes do not have to be returned to their original station which makes it easy and economical for sightseeing - especially around the seawall.
Vancouver also has ECO hybrid-electric car stations in locations all over the city that cost $1 a kilometre and can be dropped off at your final destination. ECO car locations are easily accessed by an app on your cellphone!
My vision for Peterborough is to get behind the wheel and drive this city in the right environmental direction. I hope our city planner will consider looking at the Vision Vancouver website and follow a forwardthinking model when planning future development for the City of Peterborough particularly making it more bike-friendly rather than accommodating more gas-powered vehicles.
