Music Peterborough holding consultation Oct. 29
Music Peterborough is holding a public consultation later this month to gather feedback on the needs of the local music scene.
The Music Peterborough committee is holding the event at Market Hall on Oct. 29 at 2 p.m.
They’re asking residents for their thoughts on new ways to promote and advocate for both musicians and those working in the industry.
Donald Fraser is the interim chairman of Music Peterborough.
With a deep and diverse music scene in the city, Fraser stated that Peterborough has a reputation as a cultivator of artists as well as a destination for live music in the country.
“Not only should this be celebrated, but it should be increasingly fostered,” Fraser wrote in a release.
The consultation is geared towards musicians, live music venue owners, festival organizers, arts organizations, concert promoters, producers, representatives from economic development and tourists organizations, and those invested in the promotion and development of the music industry.
Moderators will gather the input through focus groups, exploring the sector’s needs in education and training, networking, advocacy, access to funding, and promotion.
The info will then be used by the Music Peterborough committee to create a mandate and set guidelines for a permanent board of directors.
Music Peterborough is currently comprised of a temporary committee, which includes artists MaryKate Edwards, Melissa Payne and Al Black, Coun. Diane Therrien and Fraser, a writer and communications consultant.
They see the music sector as a major economic driver, Fraser stated. Through this consultation, they hope to discover ways to acknowledge and enhance its impact on the local economy, while also advocating on behalf of those who’re driving its success.
“We know that those responsible for its success are in need of both increased recognition and increased support. But, really, in order to address any of this, we have to have an inclusive participatory process. We want to bring people together to help envision the future of music in Peterborough. This is the first step,” Fraser wrote.
