Exploring vanished trails
The Peterborough Chapter of the Ontario Archaeological Society presents The Legacy of Vanished Trails, by Grant Karcich tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Trent University, Room B104 in the DNA Building.
The Chemong Portage and other trails in the Peterborough area were used specifically by the Mississauga on their annual fishing runs down to Lake Ontario. The portage was also used by the first permanent European settlers who arrived in the area circa 1817. The Middle Woodland Brock Street Burial is located very close to the Chemong Portage in downtown Peterborough.
In his presentation, Karcich will discuss the importance of the Chemong Portage and seven other trails in southern Ontario to the Indigenous people. He will explain how far back in the past they existed and for how long these portages were in use after the arrival of Europeans, as well as their contributions to our modern roadways.
These topics are explored in Karcich’s new book, The Legacy of Vanished Trails. Copies of this book will be available at the presentation. Karcich holds a provincial avocational archaeologist’s license and is the Director of Publications for the Ontario Archaeological Society.
This presentation is part of the Peterborough Chapter’s regular Speakers Series, which is open to the public at no charge, and conducted with the support of the City of Peterborough and the Trent University Archaeological Research Centre.
Light refreshments will be served. For further information contact: Tom Mohr, chapter president, at mohr@utsc.utoronto.ca or Dirk Verhulst, chapter secretary at dverhulst@cogeco.ca.
