Artists offering a rural outlook at gallery

- JOANNE CULLEY joanne.culley@sympatico.ca

The opening reception for the show Rural Outlook with paintings by the Outdoor Painters’ Group will take place at the Kawartha Artists’ Gallery and Studio on Oct. 30 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with refreshments available and artists present.

Sue Sydney will have a selection of her paintings on display.

“For as long as I can remember, I would draw and paint pictures of animals, mainly horses,” says Sydney. “My mother, who was also an artist, would encourage me, even allowing me when I was 12 years old to paint the walls in my room. One of the walls had an eight-foot long Chinese dragon and the other was filled with horses, a Pegasus on a rainbow, the four horses of the Apocalypse coming up from the underground, mare and foals in a pasture and a pair of stallions battles for a herd of mares.”

Sydney paints in a wide variety of media, primarily watercolour, but lately she has been doing more work in acrylic and pen and ink. She also uses conte, graphite and Prism pencil, pastel and scratchboard.

“The upcoming exhibit with the KAGS Outdoor Painters’ Group is very dear to me, as from childhood I wanted to live on a farm rather than in downtown Toronto,” she says. “Finally, in 1978 my dreams came true when my husband and I purchased a farm in Selwyn Township. Needless to say, aside from my horses, dogs and cats that I brought with me, we added many different kinds of farm animals including geese, chickens, peacocks and cattle. The cattle were the inspiration for my series of ‘Crazy Cows’ where I try to capture their unique personalities in each painting.”

Along with the show, there will be a silent auction of paintings, with proceeds going to the Best of High School Art Show.

The show runs from Oct. 25 to Nov. 12 at the gallery, which is located at 430 O’Connell Rd. The gallery is open daily from Wednesday to Sunday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, please call 705-741-2817 or visitwww. kawarthaartists.org.
