Phase 1 of structural improvements to the Otonabee South Monaghan Memorial Community Centre has been completed.

The old scuffed-up windows that separated the rink from viewers have been replaced with pristine windows and an energy efficient refrigeration system has been installed, among other changes. Along with the new scoreboard the Keene Lions Club donated in 2015, the revitalized ice rink looks shiny and new.

The official launch was held last Sunday afternoon, followed by an hour of free skating. The rink quickly filled up with families and skaters who appear to be ready for winter fun.

Dignitaries on hand for the ribbon cutting included MP Kim Rudd, MPP Jeff Leal, Reeve Dave Nelson, Hiawatha First Nations Chief Laurie Carr and Trillium Foundation’s Roy Wood. Nick Powers, the chair of the building and fundraising committee, introduced the special guests.

A grant of $500,000 came from the Ontario 150 Community Capital Program and OSM Township allocated $202,485 from its 2017 Federal Gas Tax Funding. The balance was funded by an Infrastructure Ontario Construction loan.

Phase 2 will include an addition for a new curling rink and proposed fitness area, larger dressing rooms and a revamped Gold Room and kitchen. REMINDERS:
