Snoek gets Hall of Fame honour

- MIKE DAVIES EXAMINER SPORTS DIRECTOR mdavies@postmedia.com

Petes radio play-by-play voice Rob Snoek was inducted into the Canadian Disability Hall of Fame on Wednesday.

The three-time Paralympian represented Canada in track and field for over 12 years. A below-knee amputee from age one due to a congenital bone disease, he grew up playing sports at a high competitive level in Orono.

Upon discovering the Paralympics in his late teens, Snoek redoubled his training and went on to compete in the Paralympic Games in Barcelona in 1992, Atlanta in 1996 and Sydney in 2000, as well as at four world championships. The induction ceremony was held at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. The Canadian Disability Hall of Fame provides permanent recognition of outstanding Canadians who have made extraordinary contributions to enriching the quality of life for people with physical disabilities. Snoek has continued to participate in Olympic and Paralympic Games as a broadcaster with CBC and Sportsnet and is scheduled to work the 2018 Olympics and Paralympics in South Korea.

“I’ve been so lucky to be able to be part of the Paralympic movement for 25 years as an athlete and a broadcaster,” Snoek said. “I certainly was not looking for recognition because just being part of the event is reward enough. It was really special to share the moment with my wife Pam who has been my backbone through 27 years of marriage.”
