The Fleming Knights got into the OCAA men’s soccer championships as hosts but showed on opening day, against the top seed Humber Hawks, they can play with the best. The Hawks emerged with a 2-0 win at the Fleming Sports Field Complex moving the Knights into the consolation round as play continues Friday with medal games on Saturday.

Fleming, who placed fifth in the east, faced a Hawks team that has been undefeated in regular season games for the past four years and ranked first in the Central Division.

Although the underdog, Fleming ensured it would not be an easy victory for the Hawks. Sam Barratt (Peterborough), Fleming’s OCAA all-star and player of the game was almost impenetrable stopping all but two of 17 shots. Nick Frenati recorded the shutout for Humber while Jaineil Hoilett and Michael Aigbokie scored.

Fleming will face the Sheridan Bruins Friday at noon.

In other games, Durham edged Fanshawe 2-1, Niagara beat George Brown 3-2 and Algonquin beat Sheridan 3-0.

Peterborough native Owen Tippett scored his first National Hockey League goal Thursday night in an 8-3 Florida Panthers win over the Anaheim Ducks in Sunrise, Fla. “It's something I've dreamed of since I was a little kid,”Tippett told reporters after the game. The 18-year-old, currently the youngest player in the NHL, has now played in four Panthers games and has been a healthy scratch for four others. The Panthers will soon need to decide whether to keep Tippett or return him to the OHL's Mississagua Steelheads, with his NHL contract kicking in after nine games. Tippett was drafted by the Panthers 10th overall in the June NHL draft and was one of only a handful of 18-year-old prospects to make their NHL rosters out of training camps this season. Fellow Peterborough native Corey Perry had no points for the Ducks in the game.
