Lions’ past president vowed to help raise $10K during year at the helm, and surpassed it

Past District President Lioness Pat Aitken recently presented a cheque for $13,251.75 to Dave Adams, executive director of Five Counties Children’s Centre Foundation. Aitken’s goal was to raise $10,000 during her year as the district president, from 201617. Thanks to the support of the Lioness and Lions in her district, family and friends, she was able to exceed her goal by 33%!

In order to raise the money, she sold raffle tickets on a framed picture of The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, a stuffed Lorax, a copy of the book and The Lorax video. She also made and sold Lorax bookmarks.

Each year more than 5,000 children and youth with physical, developmental and communication needs in the counties of Peterborough, City of Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland and Haliburton receive life changing therapy at Five Counties Children’s Centre. Of these children, more than 400 count 100% on funds raised in these communities. Funded primarily by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, a shortfall in funding for Five Counties has resulted in a waiting list of over 850 children. Community donations are key to maintaining services.

Aitken’s generous donation will mean that a number of those children on that waiting list will start their therapy sooner.
