Tickets are still up for grabs for a fundraiser in support of Hospice Peterborough.

Handbags for Hospice is happening Thursday at The Venue from 7 to 10 p.m.

There’ll be nearly 100 handbags, packaged with accessories, up for silent auction.

“It really is all about handbags,” said Linda Sunderland, executive director of Hospice Peterborough.

That said, there’s also a live auction that starts at 8 p.m. Auction items include a day of fishing with pro fisherman John McGoey, a day at St. Anne’s Spa, a trip to Vegas, a Louis Vuitton bag, dinner and axe throwing, and access to a party bus for a night.

The evening includes cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a candy bar, photo booth and an Elvis impersonator, too.

Tickets are $50 per person. Second floor lounge tickets are already sold out. Tickets are available online at www.hospicepeterborough.org or by calling 705-742-4042.

Proceeds support programming and day-to-day operations at Hospice.

Sunderland said the event is an easy way to have fun and show support at the same time.

“It’s a fun night with a feel-good feeling because you’re doing good work just by being there,” she said.

More than $44,000 was raised last year.

Meanwhile, construction of the new 10-bed care centre continues. The demolition of the former Langton House is complete and the foundation has been poured for the new building.

Hospice Peterborough purchased land on London and Reid streets that was once owned by Trent University. Hospice staff had initially planned to renovate the Victorian house on site, but several issues arose making it nearly impossible.

With the new designs finished for the updated concept, Hospice staff are holding an open house for the public to have a look.

The open house is Dec. 1 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the current Hospice Peterborough on Rubidge Street.

“I think people are going to be pleased when they see the new plans,” Sunderland said.

The new care centre is expected to open by the end of next year.
