Suspended sentence for Canada Post threat
The 57-year-old woman responsible for an April 13 bomb threat at the Canada Post building on Rye Street was given an 18-month suspended sentence for mischief over $5,000 in Peterborough Ontario Court of Justice on Tuesday.
Cindy Foss must remain 500 metres away from the building as part of the sentence meted out by Madam Justice Esther Rosenberg. A suspended sentence involves following conditions of a probation order for one to two years.
She was also ordered to take counselling or rehabilitation as directed by her probation officer and given three months to pay a $100 victim surcharge, or spend a day in jail in lieu.
The incident saw the building evacuated and city police cordon off the area of the postal depot, which is located off Lansdowne St. between Rye and Webber Ave.
The building remained closed for several hours as police investigated with the assistance of a bomb-sniffing dog from Durham Regional Police.
No bomb was found, nobody was hurt and the building reopened that day.
Foss turned herself in at police headquarters on May 1, police said. Her name was not released.
“Due to the unique and extenuating circumstances with respect to this case no personal identifying information regarding the accused will be released,” police stated.
Foss, whose first court appearance was May 18, was represented by city defence lawyer Dave McFadden while the case was prosecuted by assistant Crown attorney Kelly Eberhard.
