The Adam Scott Lions boys volleyball program continues to break new ground.

The Lions swept the COSSA AA senior and junior championships for the first time in Quinte Region on Wednesday. Last year, the school won its first COS SA boys volleyball title in its 57-year history.

The senior Lions earned a second straight trip to OFSAA, which is being held Nov. 23 to 25 in Brockville. They won the final 3-1 win over Cobourg’s St. Mary’s Thunder17-25,26-24,25-17,25-14 at Madoc’s Centre Hastings.

“For our school it’s a big thing in terms of volleyball recognition,” said senior Lions coach Chris Entwistle.

“We’ ve been working hard in the boys and girls programs to develop a name for ourselves in volleyball. The school has created a name in many other sports. We’re just trying to do the same thing in terms of getting our players involved and active and giving other opportunities for student-athletes at our school. We’re really excited to move forward again.”

In semifinal play, the Lions beat North Hastings 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-14) while St. Mary’ s beat Centre Hastings 3-1 (15-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-20).

“We only had two starters returning ,” En twist le said .“The majority of the team graduated. The two returning players were able to take on a leadership role with basically our bench from last year and they were able to run the floor.”

In junior play at St. Theresa’s in Belleville, the Lions knocked off the hosts 3-1 and defeated Centre Hastings 3-1 in the final. Game scores were unavailable.

“We haven’t won a COSSA gold in junior boys volleyball, my head of phys-ed thought, maybe, but he wasn’ t even sure, one other time in 57 years so it’ s pretty awesome ,” said Lions junior coach Darcy Wight.

“They played amazing. The best thing about the team is their ability to be a team and pick each other up. Nobody got frustrated or mad at each other. They were always positive and that’s what put them a little bit above all the other teams in the tournament.”

In AAA action in Lindsay, the I. E. Weld on Wildcats swept the senior and junior finals.

In senior, Weldon beat Thomas A. Stewart Griffins 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 23-25, 28-26) in the final.

In semifinals, the Wildcats beat North Addington 3-0(25-12,25-19, 25-11) while TASSS beat Marc Garneau 3-2 (25-19, 25-21, 24-26, 20-25, 15-6). In junior, Weldon beat St. Mary’s 3-0 (27-25, 25-12, 25-21) in the final.
