Ang signs entry-level deal with Panthers

Petes scoring leader Jonathan Ang has signed a three-year NHL entry level contract with the Florida Panthers, the NHL club announced on Thursday.

“Jonathan is a highly-skilled young player who plays a strong two-way game and possesses world class speed,” stated Panthers president of hockey ops and GM Dale Tallon, in a press release. “We’ve been impressed with Jonathan’s developmen­t and look forward to watching him continue to progress as he works towards beginning his pro career.”

“It’s an unbelievab­le feeling to sign with the Panthers,” stated Ang. “It was a dream come true to be drafted and to sign is another step towards achieving my goal of playing in the NHL.”

Entering Thursday’s game against Oshawa, Ang, 19, had appeared in 21 games this season registerin­g a team-leading 12 goals and 30 points. He was named the OHL On the Run Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 1. In one 2017 pre-season game with the Panthers, Ang posted two assists.

The six-foot, 170-pound Markham native played in two games for Team OHL in the 2017 CIBC Canada Russia Series recording one assist. Ang was selected to Hockey Canada’s 2017 World Junior Summer Showcase. He was named the Eastern Conference’s best skater in the 2016-17 Coaches Poll.

Ang was originally selected by Florida in the fourth round (94th overall) of the 206 NHL Entry Draft. During the 2016-17 season, he produced a career-high 59 points (27-32-59) in 67 regular season games and registered nine point (3-6-9) in seven playoff games. He has appeared in 215 career OHL games, all with the Petes, amassing 158 points (7088-158).

Pink in the Rink deadline

The deadline is Nov. 22 to purchase names of cancer survivors and those who lost their battle to go on the Petes’ commemorat­ive Pink in The Rink jerseys. Pink in the Rink committee members will be set up at Lansdowne Place upper level from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday to take orders. It costs $20 per name and so far 180 of the 300 slots have been filled. Event co-chairman Pete Dalliday says he’d like to see all 300 sold out. They will also be selling Pink in the Rink T-shirts for $20.

CarStar donation

Thursday game night sponsor CarStar Peterborou­gh announced prior to the game they are donating a refurbishe­d vehicle to Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Peterborou­gh.

Roster notes

The reinforcem­ents are coming for the Petes.

Logan DeNoble and Zach Gallant returned to the lineup Thursday night after missing a couple of weeks to injury. Petes coach Jody Hull said Adam Timleck (upper body) resumed skating on Monday and the Petes are hopeful he’ll be back Sunday in Kitchener.

Cole Fraser will conclude his five-game suspension on Sunday and be back next week. Hull said Nick Isaacson (upper body) is at least two weeks away from returning to skating as he continues to rehab his injury. John Parker-Jones was a healthy scratch. Peterborou­gh native Riley Stillman was out for Oshawa serving the fourth of a five-game suspension.
