Steve Casey has long been associated with one of Peterborough’s great sports traditions and now he’s lending a hand to another.

Casey has taken over as chairman for the 25th annual Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame vehicle draw. He was elected to the Hall in 2009 primarily for his 49 years of dedicated service to the Peterborough Liftlock Atom Hockey Tournament.

“I knew I was going to eventually leave the Liftlock Atom Hockey Tournament and it’s in good hands so I decided to offer my services to the sports hall of fame,” said Casey, at a press conference on Wednesday at the Hall to announce details of this year’s draw.

“When I’m involved in something or inducted into something I want to give 100 per cent. I did that for many years with the tournament and I felt because I was inducted into this sports hall of fame I should do something other than have my picture shown in the hall. I wanted to give back and I felt this was the time.”

Casey said being inducted was a great honour.

“It was a thrill of a lifetime. I couldn’t believe it when I got a call from Red Wasson telling me I’d been inducted. To be honoured amongst all these people who are on the wall brought tears to my eyes when he called. I was deeply, deeply moved and I still am to this day.”

This year’s draw winner will have a choice between three vehicles from Holiday Ford including the Ford EcoSport, Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus. There are also $500 and $100 preliminary draw prizes. The draw will be held during intermission of the final Peterborough Petes home game on March 17. There is a limit of 3,000 tickets available.

The draw is one of the Hall’s two major fundraisers along with the annual Jack’s Golf Tournament each May. Proceeds help cover Hall operating expenses and fund bursaries for local student-athletes heading to post-secondary education.

Tickets are $20 and available at 35 locations including Bank of Nova Scotia (all branches), BMO at Lansdowne Place and Portage Place, Peterborough Memorial Centre box office, Champ’s Sports Bar, CIBC (all Peterborough branches), Connelly Muffler, Coyle Tire and Auto (Lakefield), Currie Tire, DJ’s on Aylmer Street, Ennismore Pharmacy, Flannigan’s Butcher Shop (Lakefield), Hastings Legion, Henry’s Barber Shop, Hobie’s Sports, Holiday Ford, Kawartha Credit Union (Lansdowne Place, Monaghan Rd, Chemong Rd, and Keene), Kevin’s Barber Shop, King Street Market, Lakeview Bowl, Marty’s Barber Shop, Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame, Peterborough Community Credit Union, The Petes Store, Purvey’s Fish and Chips, Railway Station Restaurant (Hiawatha), Ricarts Sports Wear, Ricky’s All Day Grill, Robert Young Construction (Chemong Road), Ron’s Variety, Steve’s Quick Chek, Sticks Sports Bar & Off Track Betting, Toronto Dominion Bank (all branches).
