Symons medal for PM
Mayor will miss city budget meeting for ceremony in P. E. I.
Mayor Daryl Bennett is going to Charlottetown, P.E.I. on Thursday to see Prime Minister Justin Trudeau awarded with a medal named for Trent University founder Tom Symons. Trudeau will get the 2017 Symon sM ed al. The Symon sM eda land Lecture on the State of Canadian Confederation is held every year in Charlotte town to mark the meetings of the Fathers of Con federation in 1864.
The event takes place at the Confederation Centre of the Arts, in Charlottetown.
The medal and lecture series is named for Symons, a long-time supporter of the Confederation Centre. Symons is also noted for his work in the field of Canadian studies, particularly within public policy, heritage and education.
Previous recipients of the Symons Medal include Prince Charles, former prime minister Paul Martin and Chief Justice of Canada Beverley McLachlin.
A release from the mayor’ s office states that Bennett was invited to the event by Symons, a personal friend.
It also states that Bennett will miss the public city budget meeting the evening prior, on Wednesday at City Hall starting at 6:30 p.m.
Five people have registered to address city council about the 2018 city budget. They are: Joanne Bazak-Brokking of the Income Security Working Group of the Peter borough Poverty Reduction Network, Sonya Vellenga of the K aw art ha Sexual Assault Centre, Kathy Hardill, Meagan La Plante of the YES Shelter and Christian Harvey of the Warming Room Community Ministries.
No debate will take place that evening: budget talks start Nov. 28, and are scheduled every evening of that week at City Hall.
