City loses out on Ontario Summer Games bid
A proposal to build a two-storey brick apartment building on a piece of vacant land on Paterson St. will be reviewed by city councillors for the first time Monday.
City staff recommends that councillors approve the application for rezoning that would allow construction to take place.
The property is located at 461 Paterson St ., which is off Park Place, in a residential neighbourhood.
A city staff report notes that Habitat for Humanity is currently building a duplex next door.
The new building would have eight one-bedroom apartments, the report states. The plan calls for four parking spots for those eight apartments.
The city is struggling lately with a record-low apartment vacancy rate.
Otherwise, councillors have just a few housekeeping items on the planning committee agenda for Monday.
On Tuesday evening at the city’s community services office on Wolfe St ., the arenas, parks and recreation advisory committee meets.
Committee members will hear that Peter borough made the shortlist to potentially host the 2020 Ontario Summer Games, but then lost out.
A report from city recreation co-ordinator Rob Anderson states that the winning city hasn’t been announced yet.
Nor is it clear exactly how Peterborough fell short of being selected to host the games. Anderson’s report says Summer Games officials visited Peter borough and left with a good impression of the city.
They said Peterborough scored high as a potential host, even though it wasn’ t selected. The report states that more details will be available soon on Peterborough’s suitability for the Games.
In June, council asked city staff to submit a bid to host the 2020 Ontario Summer Games, for athletes aged 13 to 17.
There are typically 25 sports included, such as judo, squash, mountain biking, volleyball and synchronized swimming.
