Helping hand for Honduran kids

- CAROLINE MCCONNELL NORTHCREST

The Education Committee of Friends of Honduran Children is selling Christmas ornaments through Under One Sun’s fundraiser program. All profits raised by the committee will go towards scholarships for youth in Honduras. Children must pay for schooling in Honduras, and by grade seven, which is high school there, the cost becomes out of reach for many families. Often only one child per family is able to continue with their education. These scholarships will help more children attend. The scholarships must be applied for and go to deserving children who are eager to continue their schooling.

The fundraiser ornaments are made out of flattened 55 gallon steel drums by artisans in Haiti. The pieces are cut, pierced and bent with simple hand tools into intricate images and sculptures.

Nine different hanging ornaments are available. They cost $6.50 each and come in the shapes of lightbulb, love (script), maple leaf, mitten, music note, peace symbol, snowflake, snow man, and star, all with a hanging string and bead. The maple leaf and star are hand painted.

There are also three décor pieces available, including a 14.5” wreath ($39), a 6” standing angel ($19), and a 4” nativity ($15).

Ornaments must be ordered no later than Friday. To place an order call Allison at the Friends of Honduran Children office at 705-749-1900. Payment can be arranged at that time. Pick up for purchased ornaments will be at the office, located at 277 George St. N. from Dec. 11-15. Purchase an ornament to bright en your own or someone else’ s Christmas and you help change the cycle of poverty for the children in Honduras and the artisans and their families in Haiti.
