Boyd Island update

K aw art ha Land Trust officials offer update on one of Canada’ s top protected properties

Mike Hendren, executive director of the Kawartha Land Trust (KLT) and volunteer Jim Inch provided Trent Lakes council with an update on the land trust activities.

The KL Tis important to the municipali­ty as the organizati­on is the steward of Big/Boyd (Chiminis) Island. Trent Lakes Council was one of the early supporters in the fund raising campaign to save the island from developmen­t.

Inch showed council a map of the island showing the trails that have been cleaned up. A number of special events were held this past year on Boyd Island. Volunteers worked many hours providing safe access to the island, restoring shoreline and giving tours in August to public interested.

Boyd Island was named one of the top 10 protected properties in Canada by Environmen­t Canada to mark the 150th anniversar­y of Canada.

Christmas Home Tour

Five lakefront homes plus the 2016 Princess Margaret home are on the 2017 Christmas Home tour. The homes are open from 11:00 – 4:00. Buy your tickets at the Buck horn Community Centre, Griffin’ s, or the Buck horn Welcome Center. Your $20 ticket includes a map to guide you to the homes plus coffee and dessert at the BCC after your tour. Tickets are selling fast.

On Aug.24 the yard at the BCC will put on its Christmas face and the Children’s Christmas party will happen inside starting at 6:00 p.m. There will be entertainm­ent and crafts and a Secret Santa shop where children may shop. Preregiste­r at the BCC. There will be profession­ally decorated wreaths and trees for which you may buy a ticket. Winners will be announced at the Community Care Holly Tea on Dec. 5.

Good Buy Room

Looking for some local shopping? Come to the Good Buy Room thrift store from now through December to shop and say hello. In December there will be Christmas seasonal items and specials in the store.

The store is located in the lower level of the Trent Lakes Library in Buck horn. They have experience­d another successful year with proceeds going to support programs at the two library branches in the Trent Lakes Municipali­ty. A wonderful group of volunteers will w el- come you as you enter as they serve customers, keep the store tidy and organized, sort and manage donations, and stock the store.

This store and the volunteers are so important to the libraries in Trent Lakes. The volunteers are thanked for their continued support and their time in making the store successful and pleasant. The customers, too, are thanked for shopping in the Thrift Store and making donations. Donations of gently used clothing, accessorie­s, footwear, housewares, linens, books and games and home and seasonal decor are greatly appreciate­d. Appliances, infant and child safety equipment, mattresses or large furniture items are not accepted. Store staff asks that donations be brought during store hours.

Winter hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 1-4 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Good Buy Room will close Dec .23 at 3:00 p.m. for two weeks.
