Trent site wrong for new city arena

-

Don Barrie has it right, two of our Peterborough councillors have it right and major sporting teams in Peterborough have it right. My main question then is how come the other nine councillors just don’t get it?

It is completely mind-boggling how Otonabee Conservation will allow the city to fill in almost 12,000 square feet of wetland to build a new arena and yet comes down so hard on the ordinary person.

What is more mind-boggling is that only two councillors out of 11 realized that this arena could be built in another space and we would be saving wetlands for our wildlife and future generations.

I used to worry about the future of our country. However, after hearing the students of Trent presenting the facts on why this important wetland should not be touched I know now that our country will have a great future if only WE LISTEN. However once again I find it mind-boggling that nine of our councillors have completely ignored the message.

Is it the almighty dollar that the city leaders are worried about? Is it the fact that they have already overspent on preparing this site at Trent? If these are the problems just wait until a $54-million venture comes back in the $80 million-plus range. I am sure Peterborough has far better locations in less congested areas and I truly believe that our city leaders should be looking at a location in the centre of the city bringing people in instead of taking them out.

Can you just imagine a 6,000-seat entertainment and sporting complex with Olympic size pool and two or three ice pads sitting in one location and easy to reach without the congested traffic you will have around the Trent location? Think about it.
