The Finer Things in life

Popular show and sale featuring local professional artisans returns Saturday

- ELIZABETH SARGEANT

The Finer Things Artisan Show and Sale is making its way back to Seeds of Change on Saturday.

This year’s show will feature pieces from 23 different artisans and will host a wide variety of creations for holiday shoppers and artisan lovers to admire and purchase.

“The key part of the show is supporting artisans who take their craft seriously” says Sarah Crane, co-organizer of The Finer Things Craft Show and founder of Frolic Art and Design. “We take time to make this show really drive and make sure the pieces complement each other well.”

A majority of the artisans showcasing in the holiday sale treat their work as a full-time career and Crane and others want to support them by hosting such a widely attended and highly praised event.

Almost all pieces featured in The Finer Things Artisan Show are made by artisans in the Peterborough and Kawarthas area. The Finer Things Show will also be showcasing work from one artist who resides in Georgian Bay as well as a handful from Kingston.

The artisan show will be displaying a collection of 3D wall art, handbags, glass work, ceramics, fine arts, scarves and herbal products.

The Finer Things

This curated artisan show and sale runs Saturday from 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at Emmanuel United Church at George and McDonnel streets. Participating vendors include:

• Aitken & Hyde, ceramics Colouring books, blankets and gift cards will also be featured alongside jewelry that is handmade with semi-precious stones, silver, and gold. All products are proudly professionally hand crafted by the artisans.

Among the spread of unique artistry, some of the most one-of-akind pieces come straight from the Canadian Shield. Christie Haldane takes rocks and granite, slices them in half, and then infuses them with glass to create pendants and sculptures.

Another unique artist, Christine Ferguson, is most known for making wearable art pieces. “Her work is really vibrant” says Crane. Brad Copping, a glass blower, will be showcasing his glass vases. The vases, much like other works in the show, are both functional as well as beautiful.

If shoppers and artisan enthusiasts need a break, the show is not only a place to shop but a place but a place to sit and snack. “We wanted to make the show a welcoming environment” says Crane.

There is a miniature café with food provided by Lakefield Bakery, Hard Winter Bread Co. Shoppers can sit down for tea, coffee and cookies as well as take home a tin of baked treats if they choose.

This is the third year that The Finer Things Artisan Show and Sale has taken place. The event is located at Emmanuel United Church, 543 George St., in the lower level. It is $2 at the door and children 12 and under get in for free. The first 50 people in line will receive a free tote bag designed by Crane.
