Porsche perfects the 718 Cayman, Boxster formula with GTS models
What is it? Known to many as the Boxster and Cayman, Porsche’s 718 model gets a higher performing sibling: the 718 GTS in convertible and coupe variants. For 2018, GTS models get more horsepower and torque, as well as coveted performance gear torque vectoring and Porsche’s sport exhaust system, as standard equipment. GTS interiors are swaddled in more Alcantara, too.
Why does it matter? Replacing the much-loved flat-six boxer engine with a turbocharged four cylinder caused more than a few to second guess the downsizing. But 365 horsepower (15 more hp than the S) from the 2.5-litre boxer four returns a zero-to-100 km/h time of 4.1 seconds on 718 GTS models with automatic (PDK) transmissions. That should be quick enough to silence most critics.
A six-speed manual transmission remains available, proving there’s still a “driver’s car” philosophy baked into the new models.
When is it coming? The 718 GTS models will arrive at Canadian dealerships in the first quarter of 2018. But they can be ordered now, at a starting price of $90,600 for the Cayman and $93,000 for the Boxster. Should you buy it? If a new Porsche 911 is too big a car, either physically or financially, the 718 GTS will deliver the same — or possibly more — visceral and physical excitement in a car many argue is more balanced and fun because of its mid-mounted engine.
