Minor Bantams settle for silver at Silver Stick
An outstanding tournament fell one game short for the Manulife Investments minor bantam AA Petes on Sunday at the Cobourg Community Centre.
The Petes dropped a 3-1 decision to the Ottawa Rideau St. Lawrence Kings in the final of the 2017 Northumberland Silver Stick AA Regional Championship game.
Dawson Cook scored the Petes’ only goal from Carter Cannon while Petes goaltender Xavier Lehmann had a strong performance.
The Petes opened the tournament with a 4-3 win against the Northumberland Nighthawks in Port Hope. Jack Ryan had a hat trick with assists on his goals from Nick Stinson, Thomas Golden and Matt Collyer. Dominic McMorrow added the other goal assisted by John Hawman. Ryder Hadwyn was solid between the pipes.
In Game 2, the Petes beat the Oakville Ranger Blues 4–3. Goal scorers were John Croxson, Golden, Michael Carter and Collyer with assists to Sullivan Casselman, Hawman, Cook and Collyer. Xavier Lehmann earned the win.
In Game 3, the Petes lost to the Scarborough Bruins 4-2. Croxson and Cook were the scorers with assists to McMorrow, Cannon and Collyer. Hadwyn supported the team in net.
In the semifinals, the Petes again played the Bruins and defeated them 2–1. McMorrow and Collyer scored with assists by Cannon, Croxson and Hawman. Lehmann had a solid performance in net.
From Dec. 1 to 3, more than 1,442 players, 88 teams, and 11 different age divisions from Ontario participated in the 2017 Northumberland Regional Silver Stick Tournament.
Next action for the Petes is Saturday at 6:30 p.m. against the Belleville Bulls at the Kinsmen Civic Centre.
