Artist joins ‘elves’ for Christmas tea

- MARLYS KERKMAN BUCKHORN kerkmam@gmail.com

A small group of Christmas elves organized a wonderful Christmas tea for members of the community at the Lakehurst Hall. Sandwiches of salmon, tuna, egg salad, and cucumber accompanied sweet bars and squares along with lots of tea and coffee. Along with enjoying the friendship of neighbours, guests enjoyed local artist, Rita White, who shared her artistic journey using the medium of stained glass, art glass, birch bark, stone and metal.

Rita traced her work from the first stained glass piece she made – a heart. It was flat. She quickly advanced to using other objects with art glass. She used more solder to produce scales on a stained glass fish. She used vases as part of a piece in which the vases were usable from both sides. Three dimensional work became more intriguing. Metal trees and polar bears added a third dimension to the glass.

She finds nature provides many of her materials. Rocks which she has picked up on fishing trips become part of her work as does birch bark using epoxy to glue them to the glass. The glass speaks to her suggesting the theme of the piece. To see more of her work go to www.ritawhite.ca

Holly Tea

‘Tis the season for people to come together, enjoy friendships and support community organizations – in this case Community Care. At the Holly Tea volunteers made the tasty lunch! Volunteers gathered fantastic items for a loonie auction and a silent auction.

Those volunteers were successful as there were many local businesses and individuals who donated generously. Kawartha Winery, Lew Gallery, Gallery on the Lake, Lynn Woodcroft and Marg Weikmann of Royal LePage, Shambhala, Jennifer’s Hair Salon, Cody Inn, Alloro Pizza contributed to the auctions.

Secret Santas donated a $100 bill and $50 bills. There was a Hickory Farm basket, an oil painting, pearl and diamond earrings and Dumas prints. When it was all counted over $2,700 was raised for Community Care Harvey.
