Lioness delivering lunch
Local club members make sure everyone in the community has a Christmas meal
The Norwood Lioness continued a long-standing Christmas tradition on Dec. 9.
For more than 30 years Lioness Elves have been delivering Christmas lunch boxes (a week or two before Dec. 25) to the senior members of the community who are shut-in, alone or have lost a spouse recently. This year the club provided a little Christmas cheer to more than 60 residents in the community.
Lioness members (and their helpers) prepare lunches of sandwiches, squares, fruit, veggies and cheese and a special handmade holiday favour with each one before personally delivering them to the individuals home.
Window winners
Asphodel-Norwood Economic Development and Beatification Advisory Committee members and friends looked like they were doing a bit of window shopping last week as they stopped to stare at the windows of the various businesses in town. In reality the small group was actually judging the committee’s seventh annual Christmas window display contest. In the first ever tie for first place; congratulations go to our two village flower shops Lyn’s Flowers and Gifts and Alois Flowers for their unique displays of lights, greenery and décor.
The organizers were once again impressed with the number of business participating and with the quality and creativity of the displays, which are judged for their lighting, content and artistry. The two winners each received a special decal for their window and a gift certificate. The committee extends their thanks and congratulations to all business that participated and helped to make the village look “exceptionally festive this year.”
Curling News
Norwood Curling Club held its annual Invitational Senior Men’s Turkey Bonspiel at their Alma Street rink on Dec. 5. This bonspiel has been an annual tradition for more than 30 years; it is strictly an invitational bonspiel, meaning quite simply that teams must be invited in order to participate. What makes it even more unique is the fact that all participating curlers must be 50 years of age or older.
This year teams from Norwood, Omemee, Peterborough, Campbellford, Cobourg, Stirling, Ennismore and Lindsay were invited to play. In total 16 teams competed in two separate draws with each team playing two games over the course of the day. Winners were determined in each draw on a points earned basis over their two games.
Prizes in the form of frozen turkeys were awarded to the top three teams in each draw. Norwood Foodland generously sponsored the bonspiel. The first place winner in the late draw and the overall winner of the bonspiel with a total of 37.5 points, was the team of Rob Eastman (skip), Paul Desormeaux (vice), Rene Germain (second) and Ian Hartford (lead) from the West Northumberland Curling Club (Cobourg). The first place winner in the early draw and the second place team overall with a total of 35.5 points was the team of Dan Reynolds (skip), Don Harris (vice), Frank Smith (second) and Ralph Mutton (lead) from the Lindsay Curling Club. Two local teams skipped by Nick Nickson and Gord Montgomery also did well placing second and third in the late draw.
