Frostbite alert issued

-

Peterborough Public Health has issued its first frostbite alert of the season.

Environment Canada forecasted a low of -20 C early Thursday, feeling more like -29 C with the wind chill, in Peterborough and the Kawarthas. A high of just -13 C is expected for Thursday, with the low temperature dropping to -19 C early Friday, feeling more like -25 C with the wind chill.

Due to the frostbite alert, the city opened the One Roof Community Centre, located at 99 Brock St., from 7 until 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday night prior to the nightly opening of The Warming Room, located at 175 Murray St., at 9:30 p.m.

The extreme cold poses a risk to babies, seniors, people with circulatory issues and the homeless, the health unit warns.

The health unit issued these tips:

Check face and extremities frequently for signs of frostbite. Exposed skin can freeze in as little as 10 to 30 minutes.

Consider re-scheduling outdoor recreational activities, especially during the evening. There is a serious risk of hypothermia and frostbite if outdoors for long periods.

Use caution when shoveling snow especially for those that have heart, respiratory (breathing) problems or other medical conditions. Snow shoveling is strenuous and can cause an onset of heart or respiratory problems.

Check on the elderly or people with disabilities living alone.

Wear weather-appropriate clothing, including synthetics and wool.

Dress in layers with a windresistant outer layer. You can remove layers if you get too warm (before you start sweating) or add a layer if you get cold.
