Trent Swim Club returns with 13 medals from Gatineau

The Trent Swim Club carted home 13 medals from the 2017 Gatineau Grand Prix Invitation­al Meet.

Gatineau played host to about 20 teams and 450 swimmers from Eastern Ontario and Quebec. Trent Swim Club sent approximat­ely 35 swimmers and returned with 13 medals and approximat­ely 75 per cent lifetime personal best performanc­es.

Leading the way for TSC was 16-year-old Evan Feick winning a gold in the 100 metre breaststro­ke and silver medals in the 50 and 200 breaststro­ke for the AAA division. All three swims for Feick were personal best performanc­es.

In the 14-year-old AA division Meg Rogers had a silver medal performanc­e in the 200 freestyle and a bronze medal in the 100 freestyle both personal best times. In the 14-year-old AAA female division, Rachel Chayer picked up a bronze in the 800 freestyle and Jaiden Rose had a bronze n the 50 and 200 backstroke. Rogers combined with Chayer, Rose and Elizabeth Ferrari to win a silver medal in the 14-yearold 200 medley relay.

Competing in the 15 and over AA division, 16 year old Havelock native Shelby Day won two bronze medals in 200 backstroke and 400 individual medley achieving lifetime bests in both events. In the AA 14 year old boys, Patrick Tompkins had a bronze in the 200 fly, lowering his personal best time by over seven seconds in one day and teammate Tristin Melville won a bronze in the 50 breaststro­ke, also achieving a lifetime best swim.

Placing in the top eight in the 13-14 AA division were Meg Rogers, 50 freestyle, 100 fly and Macy Mullen in the 200 breast. Placing in the top eight in the 13-14 AAA division were Ellie Ferrari in the 200 IM, 200 backstroke and 200 breastroke and Maxeen Mullen in the 50 breast, 100 breast and 200 breaststro­ke. Chayer had top eight placings in the 13-14 AAA division in 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 50 fly and 100 fly and Rose had a top eight in the 50 freestyle.

Placing in the top eight in the 15 and over AA division were Day in the 200 freestyle (B final), 100 backstroke and Laura Pulchinski 100 freestyle (B final) and 50 fly (B final). Older sibling Emma Pulchinski had top eight in the 50 backstroke (B final) 50 fly and Alayna Nottingham Round had a top eight in the 50 backstroke (B final). Ali Becker had a top eight in the 100 backstroke (B final) 100 breaststro­ke (B final) as well as Sadie May, competing in the AA B final of the 100 breaststro­ke. Competing in the 15 and over AAA division was Bella Crockower placing top eight in the 200 backstroke, 50 fly and 100 fly.

In the male, 15 and over AAA division, Samuel Loureiro Kent had a top eight placing in the 50 backstroke (B final) and the 100 backstroke (B final). Taggert Johnson had top eight in the 50 backstoke (B final) and the 100 backstroke (B final). Ryder Linde Elmhirst and Tristen Jones had a top eight finish in the 800 freestyle with both posting personal bests. Jones, Johnson and Linda Elmhirst combined to place sixth overall in the 15 and over 200 medley relay and seventh overall in the 200 freestyle relay. Both relays were seeded outside the top eight positions and thus their overall standing was an upset finish.

Next up is the Huronia Regional Short Course Championsh­ips hosted by Trent Swim Club in Bracebridg­e in February. It is anticipate­d this year’s event will draw about 500 athletes from Orangevill­e, Orillia, Owen Sound and parts in between at the Bracebridg­e Recreation­al complex.
